Why Angelo Must Go

82 total draft picks – 22 still on roster, Haine on the roster for 4 years, hiring Mike Martz, overspending on free agents and trades to cover up lack of depth (i.e. paying max $ for Peppers when the rest of the defensive line is just a bunch of “guys”. What would have happened this year if Peppers got injured? How many sacks would we have?). Continuing on….Signing Roy Williams and Brandon Mana…Mana….Not gonna be good at football anymore because Martz wanted them, trading away Greg Olsen because Martz did not want him, drafting at least 20 defensive backs in 10 drafts (Safeties Todd Johnson, Chris Harris, Kevin Payne, Craig Steltz, Al Afalava, Major Wright, and Chris Conte), drafting 9 offensive lineman in 10 drafts including a total of 1 pick in the 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 drafts), need I really go on?

This man has been running the show for 10 years. The Bears have been an average team over that span. We have had some good years and some bad years. I will give Angelo credit, where credit is due. The defense under the Lovie and Jerry regime has without a doubt been the most consistent facet of the franchise. Urlacher, Briggs, and Tillman have anchored a solid defense during this era. The problem is that they and Julius Peppers are getting older. The championship window is fading. Jerry has not drafted any up and coming defensive players to transition in and keep the defense respectable. Offensively, trading for Cutler was probably worth Orton and the draft picks considering the Bears history with the quarterback position (puke). Somehow, Angelo managed to draft Matt Forte although reports indicate that Lovie may have had quite a bit to do with that. Last but certainly not least, Jerry drafted Devin Hester. Dare I say, a “ridiculous” player. Unfortnately, Jerry and Lovey have likely tainted the effectiveness and longevity of Hester’s unparalleled return game by trying to make him into a wide receiver. He can play receiver. He’s just not that great at it.

At the end of the day, when it comes to Jerry’s track record, the bad far outweighs the good. Although the defense has been fairly steady during his tenure, he has hardly built what most would call a sustainable franchise. It feels like Jerry’s constantly trying to dig the Bears out of a hole. Unfortunately, the hole is getting deeper and deeper. It’s caving in from all sides. How much longer will the likes of patchwork players like Jamarcus Webb and Dane Sanzenbacher be able to keep the hole from caving in? The Bears are going in the wrong direction. It’s time for a change. Angelo Must Go.
